Right now, millions of tiny computers are embedded into the world to create a wireless sensor networks. These computers and sensors allow different people to gather data from the real-world on a large scale. It's mostly mesh networks where nodes talk to eachother.

There are many good applications to this kind of network. For exemple, scientists can use these sensors to track the effect of diseases and treatments. A good monitoring, in this case, can make science and reserach advance much faster than it does right now. There are also many good environnemental applications such as eco-system monitoring.

The research is still new for these projects and there is still much to do. For one, sensor networks are very hard to implement, and costy. They require multi-disciplinary teams, reseachs, experts and funding. However, if they succeed, the benefits for science could be tremendous.
